Founded in 1881 as the home of the Vesterålen Steamship Company, Stokmarknes (NO SKN) is celebrated as the birthplace of Norway's Hurtigruten coastal express. The port is served mainly by that coastal line, which carries palletised general cargo alongside passengers between Bergen and Kirkenes. Fishing remains a mainstay of this Vesterålen community on Hadseløya island, but container services, international customs clearance and bulk handling are not established here. Hinterland access depends on road links and bridges to neighbouring islands, with no rail connection. Freight forwarders with containers or heavier industrial loads should look to Sortland, Narvik or Bodø instead.
