Agricultural bulk, cement, fertilizer, steel, lumber and oversized project pieces such as transformers and wind-turbine blades make up the bread and butter at Stockton, a working bulk and breakbulk port rather than a container terminal. It sits about 120 kilometres inland at the head of the Stockton Deep Water Ship Channel, deep in California's Central Valley, yet handled roughly 6.8 million metric revenue tons worth some US$1.76 billion in 2024. Of its 15 berths, five are set up for general cargo, served by two port-owned Liebherr 550 mobile harbour cranes rated at 144 tonnes each and backed by more than 650,000 m² of covered storage. The channel lets ships of 45,000–55,000 DWT transit fully laden, and up to 80,000 DWT on a partial load. Hinterland reach comes via the port's own rail connections, interstate highways and the inland waterways of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. Shippers needing containers route through Oakland instead, while neighbouring Sacramento shares the regional project- and bulk-cargo trade.
