About 350,000 TEU moved across the Stockholm Norvik deep-water terminal in 2024, up some twelve percent on the year and effectively the region's container business. Opened in 2020 at Nynäshamn around 50 kilometres south of the city, this — not the central quays — is where deep-sea boxes are now handled. Hutchison Ports runs the largely automated container terminal alongside a RoRo terminal, with full automation using remote-controlled straddle carriers due for completion by 2027. The inner-city terminals Värtahamnen, Frihamnen and Stadsgården focus on ferries to Finland and the Baltic states plus RoRo, oil and bulk cargo. Forwarders routing containers to central Sweden should therefore think Norvik rather than the urban port. Motorways and rail links serve the hinterland toward Stockholm and the Mälaren valley. For larger container volumes, Gothenburg on the west coast, or Gdynia and Gdańsk, are the principal alternatives.
