At the head of the Portland Canal, hard against the Alaska boundary, Stewart is British Columbia's most northerly deep-water port and stays navigable year-round. Stewart World Port opened in 2015 at a cost of CAD 70 million, with a later phase adding concentrate sheds and a travelling shiploader rated at 3,300 tonnes per hour. The deep-sea wharf berths handymax and panamax vessels and handles bulk, breakbulk and project cargo rather than containers. Outbound flows centre on raw logs, forest products, mineral concentrates, wood chips, pellets and coal, while inbound cargoes include mine resupply, pipe, modules, cement powder and fuel. Road access runs via Highway 37A to the Stewart-Cassiar Highway, serving the mining and forestry hinterland of northwest British Columbia. For containerised freight, shippers turn to the Port of Prince Rupert further south.
