Between 22 and 45 million kilograms of seafood cross the docks at Steveston each year, making it Canada's largest commercial fishing harbour. Set on the south arm of the Fraser River in Richmond, British Columbia, the 17.5-hectare basin shelters more than 500 commercial fishing vessels. Run by the Steveston Harbour Authority since 1990 under a lease from the federal Small Craft Harbours programme, it specialises in fish packing, net mending, boat repair and direct off-the-boat sales at Fisherman's Wharf. It is not a container or general-cargo port, and channel depth is maintained only through periodic dredging. Shippers with commercial freight, container or customs requirements should use the nearby Port of Vancouver.
