Sweden's largest chemical cluster sits at Stenungsund, about 40 km north of Gothenburg, and its jetties exist to feed that industry. At its core, the Borealis steam cracker turns naphtha, ethane, propane and butane into roughly 620,000 tonnes of ethylene and 228,000 tonnes of propylene a year. Liquefied-gas and chemical tankers therefore dominate the more than 400 annual ship calls, importing cracker feedstock and exporting olefins and polymers used by Perstorp, INEOS and Nouryon. Butane is held on site in an underground rock cavern. There is no container handling here; boxed cargo and its customs clearance run through Gothenburg and its deep-sea terminals. For forwarders with tanker and dangerous-goods expertise, Stenungsund is a specialised industrial port rather than a general gateway.
