Saint-Nazaire is best understood as an industrial and heavy-lift port rather than a container terminal, anchored by shipbuilding and offshore wind at the mouth of the Loire. The Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard builds some of the world's largest cruise ships, and its new Anemos plant turns out foundations and electrical substations for offshore wind farms. Road, rail and inland waterway connect the quays to the French interior. Shippers needing a pure container gateway will look north to Le Havre.
