Saint-Nazaire is best understood as an industrial and heavy-lift port rather than a container terminal, anchored by shipbuilding and offshore wind at the mouth of the Loire. The Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard builds some of the world's largest cruise ships, and its full order book pushed up steel-plate imports for hull construction during 2025, while the adjacent Anemos plant produces foundations and electrical substations for offshore wind farms and Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions) shipped three vessel loads of engines in the same year. Offshore wind volumes across the port group doubled in 2025 to about 200,000 tonnes: oversized components through Saint-Nazaire, rock armour through Cheviré and cables through Montoir de Bretagne, mostly for the Yeu-Noirmoutier wind farm. The Nantes Saint-Nazaire port group handled 26.4 million tonnes in 2025, 20 million of them inbound, while Montoir's ro-ro terminal slipped 1.9% to around 400,000 tonnes before vehicle imports picked up from September. Containers, LNG and agribulk are worked at neighbouring Montoir de Bretagne, with import clearance through French customs, and road, rail and inland waterway link the quays to the interior. Shippers needing dense container liner coverage will look north to Le Havre; La Rochelle is an option for agribulk and dry bulk.
