Newfoundland's primary and most advanced container terminal operates at St John's, the easternmost major port in North America and ice-free year-round. It is the city's only container, trailer and RoRo facility, fitted with two RoRo ramps, three Liebherr mobile harbour cranes and reefer outlets for temperature-controlled boxes. Throughput runs at about 150,000 TEU a year, complemented by general cargo, dry and liquid bulk, breakbulk and project loads. The port is also the principal offshore-energy supply and service centre on Canada's east coast. Carriers such as Oceanex link it to the mainland, supporting both regional and international flows. For wider container networks, Halifax remains the natural alternative, with Argentia serving specialised offshore traffic.
