General cargo, grain, cement, petroleum products, ores, timber, marble and wine make up most of what moves across Split's quays, alongside RoRo units. Cargo is handled in the northern basins (Sjeverna luka, the Kaštela basins) and the Vranjic-Solin basin, where a container and RoRo terminal offers a roughly 200-metre berth at 10.3 metres depth plus refrigerated and open storage. The port is best known, however, as Croatia's largest passenger port and the third busiest in the Mediterranean, dominated by ferries to the Dalmatian islands; a new passenger terminal worth about 17 million euros opened in mid-2025. Container throughput is modest by Adriatic standards. Hinterland access runs via the A1 motorway toward Zagreb and a rail connection. For meaningful container business, Rijeka or Koper (Slovenia) are the stronger options.
