At the heart of Angola's gas-export industry stands the Soyo LNG terminal, the country's only liquefied-natural-gas plant, sited where the Congo River meets the South Atlantic. The single-train facility has a capacity of about 5.2 million tonnes per year and is run by Angola LNG Limited, a consortium of Chevron, Sonangol, BP, Eni and TotalEnergies. After its first cargo in 2013 and a restart in 2016 following technical failures, the plant had shipped its 400th LNG cargo by June 2023, supplying more than 30 countries. In 2023 Europe took roughly 75 percent of exports, with France and the United Kingdom the largest buyers and India a key market; feedstock comes mainly from associated offshore gas, with non-associated volumes from Eni's Northern Gas Complex to follow. Crucially for forwarders, Soyo handles LNG only and processes no containers or general breakbulk. Containerised and project cargo for the area moves through the Port of Luanda, about 330 kilometres to the south.
