A branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway reaches its Pacific terminus at Sovetskaya Gavan, one of the finest natural harbours in the Russian Far East. The sheltered inlet on the Tatar Strait is shared with a major naval base, while the commercial quays handle close to 2.26 million tonnes a year. Dry bulk, general cargo, timber and liquid bulk dominate the throughput, and landed fish supplies regional processing plants under the Northern Delivery programme. Containers are marginal here; for standardised boxes the neighbouring deep-water port of Vanino, with its large coal terminal, is the stronger option. A permanent freight and passenger border checkpoint allows customs clearance on site, and the roughly 20 m channel accepts vessels up to about 300 m in length. For container flows toward the Pacific, Vostochny and Nakhodka remain the practical alternatives.
