Around 11 m of water depth lets every ship that navigates the St Lawrence dock at Sorel-Tracy, the year-round port at the mouth of the Richelieu River about 70 km north-east of Montréal. Operated by QSL, the terminal specialises in bulk cargo, general cargo and steel, handling agricultural goods, fertilisers, road salt and oversized steel parts for the local metallurgy industry. Two CN rail lines plus direct highway access connect it to North American markets. It is an industrial and heavy-cargo facility rather than a container terminal, with no liner box service. For containers, Montréal and Contrecœur are the practical alternatives; for bulk, Trois-Rivières and Bécancour also serve the corridor.
