For some seventy years the Sombra–Marine City ferry carried millions across the St. Clair River, but ice damage in January 2018 shut it down for good, and Sombra (CA SOM) in Ontario has had no cross-river link since. Today it is a small riverside community on the channel's eastern bank with no commercial cargo terminal; the busy Great Lakes shipping lane simply passes by rather than calling here. Its freight relevance is very limited. For genuine cargo handling and border traffic, nearby Sarnia and Windsor are the practical alternatives.
