Liquefied natural gas and imported coal define the Port of Soma (JP SOM) in Fukushima Prefecture on Honshu's east coast far more than containers do. Its LNG terminal, opened in 2018 with around 1.3 million tonnes per year of regasification capacity and two tanks expanded to 460,000 m³ in 2020, feeds an adjacent gas-fired power station, while a separate berth lands Australian coal (from Abbot Point and Newcastle) for regional power generation. Sheltered by breakwaters, the port also handles local distribution cargo. It is an energy and bulk facility rather than a box port. For containerised and general cargo, Onahama in the south of the prefecture and Sendai-Shiogama are the practical alternatives.
