About 900,000 tonnes of cargo a year move through Södertälje, the port 30 km west of Stockholm on the Södertälje Canal at the mouth of Lake Mälaren. Its three core businesses are container handling, RoRo and oil, serving the wider Stockholm–Mälardalen region. The port is a major vehicle gateway: roughly 30 percent of Sweden's imported new cars – between 110,000 and 130,000 vehicles a year – arrive here, and Scania's main factory sits next door. Inter Terminals operates a tank farm for fuel oil, diesel, jet fuel, biofuels, chemicals and bitumen, while project cargo such as house modules, steel pipes and concrete elements is handled on demand. Rail tracks run into the terminal and connect to the national network, supporting road–rail transshipment. For very large container volumes Gothenburg leads, but for the Stockholm area Södertälje is a full-service multipurpose port.
