About 25 vessels and some 32,000 tonnes of cargo pass through Sligo each year, making it a small but genuine commercial harbour — the only working port on Ireland's west coast between Galway and Derry. Two jetties on the River Garavogue, known as Deepwater and Barytes, handle ships of up to roughly 3,500 tonnes and 110 metres, with a maximum draught near 5.2 metres. Inbound cargoes are mainly coal, timber, salt and fertilisers, while forestry products such as logs lead the exports. The port handles dry bulk and breakbulk rather than containers or RoRo traffic. Containerised or larger consignments for the north-west generally route via Galway or the east-coast ports around Dublin.
