Commissioned in 1961, the Slagen works near Tønsberg spent six decades refining North Sea crude before ExxonMobil converted the site into a fuel import terminal in 2021. Today its subsidiary Esso Norge receives finished petroleum products at a deepwater jetty and redistributes them by coastal tanker to terminals in Fredrikstad, Bergen and Trondheim. The berth, set at the mouth of the Oslofjord where thousands of vessels pass yearly, offers around 23 metres of water and handles only liquid bulk. Forwarders should note that Slagentangen takes no containers, breakbulk or RoRo traffic of any kind. Boxed cargo and general freight for the region move instead through Oslo or nearby Borg/Fredrikstad. Customs handling here is geared to mineral-oil flows rather than commercial import clearance.
