Ten specialised berths for crude oil, gas, LNG and aromatics define Skikda, Algeria's third-largest commercial port and the country's petrochemical anchor on the north-eastern Mediterranean coast (the former Philippeville). The port ships crude from the Hassi Messaoud fields and liquefied natural gas from a terminal whose trains have a combined nameplate of 7.7 mtpa, though only one train was running at about 4.5 mtpa in 2025; in 2023 it dispatched roughly 27 LNG cargoes, mainly to France, Italy and Spain. The M3 jetty, commissioned in 2024, now accommodates large LNG carriers. A multipurpose and container terminal also operates here, but Algeria's mainline box traffic runs chiefly through Algiers, Béjaïa and Oran. With a channel depth near 15.5 m, Skikda handles Panamax and Post-Panamax vessels. Freight forwarders should treat it as an energy and bulk port first, using the larger container hubs for boxed cargo.
