Crude oil, not containers, defines La Skhira on Tunisia's Gulf of Gabès, about 160 nautical miles south-east of Tunis. The port is an open roadstead with an export jetty, shipping Algerian and Tunisian crude fed by a 775 km pipeline from eastern Algeria, plus some phosphoric acid, at around 8.4 million tonnes a year. It can handle tankers of roughly 160,000 DWT drawing up to 15.2 metres, but it offers no container or conventional breakbulk terminal. Shippers with boxes, general cargo or RoRo therefore look elsewhere — Radès near Tunis for containers, Sfax and Gabès for dry bulk and breakbulk. As one of Tunisia's six principal ports, La Skhira matters strategically, yet strictly as a liquids terminal. Its cargo profile stays narrow and energy-bound.
