Several berths built for bulk carriers and general-cargo ships mark Skelleftehamn as an industrial port rather than a liner terminal, on Sweden's Gulf of Bothnia coast. Its purpose is to serve the Boliden Rönnskär works — among the world's most efficient copper smelters and one of its largest electronic-scrap recyclers. Inbound traffic is dominated by copper and lead concentrates from Boliden's own mines and external suppliers, while outbound cargo includes copper, lead, zinc, precious metals and sulphuric acid. Road and rail links carry concentrate to and from the smelter, forming the port's working hinterland. As a far-northern Baltic port, it depends on icebreaker assistance in winter.
