Home to barely a few hundred residents, Skagaströnd (UN/LOCODE ISSKA) was nonetheless the first place in Iceland to operate a fully equipped freezer trawler, a milestone that still defines its economy today. Sitting on a sheltered natural harbour on the east side of Húnaflói bay on Iceland's north coast, the port has served as a trading post since the late 15th century and now functions almost exclusively as a fishing and seafood-processing hub. Most whitefish and shrimp catches are frozen at sea aboard factory trawlers before landing, so container or general cargo throughput in the conventional sense is minimal. Road access runs via Route 1, the Ring Road, toward Blönduós and Akureyri; Iceland has no freight rail network. For container handling, break-bulk cargo, and routine customs clearance, the port of Akureyri, roughly 100 kilometres away, is the more practical alternative. As an EEA member rather than an EU member, Iceland applies simplified customs procedures for trade with the EU without being part of the customs union. Recent efforts to diversify into biotechnology aim to reduce the village's historic dependence on fishing alone.
