Operated in service of Ørsted's Skærbækværket combined heat and power plant, the port of Skærbæk on the northern shore of Kolding Fjord is first and foremost an energy facility. Since the plant's conversion to biomass, its quay mainly receives shipborne wood chips used as fuel for power and district heating. Throughput is therefore weighted towards bulk biomass rather than containers or general liner cargo, and no public container or liner customs terminal is confirmed here. Road and rail links tie the site into the hinterland around Fredericia and Kolding. Shippers with container, project or breakbulk cargo realistically use the nearby multipurpose Port of Fredericia, which handles breakbulk, dry bulk, containers and tankers. Skærbæk itself stays a specialised energy port with a narrowly defined cargo profile.
