Unlike Ukraine's deep-water container gateways, Skadovsk built its trade on roll-on/roll-off ferries carrying TIR trucks across the Black Sea to Turkey, with services to Zonguldak and, from 2015, Istanbul. The shallow harbour on Dzharylhach Bay, with depths of only about 3 to 5 metres, was never designed for container lines, dry bulk or tankers. Since the 2022 Russian invasion the port has been under Russian occupation, and regular commercial operation under Ukrainian customs authority is not confirmed. Forwarders should not factor Skadovsk into schedulable shipments at present. For Ukrainian Black Sea imports and exports, the Greater Odesa ports — Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi — are the workable alternatives. Skadovsk's current freight relevance is effectively suspended.
