At Sitia, passenger ferries — not container ships — set the rhythm: on the north-eastern tip of Crete, this is primarily a ferry harbour. Blue Star and others link it year-round with Piraeus and the islands of Kasos, Karpathos, Halki, Rhodes and Santorini, with traffic peaking in summer. The port also shelters fishing boats and yachts and takes smaller cargo and supply vessels, though its cargo quay is shallow at about 3.4 m. Scheduled container services do not call, and inland links run by coastal road toward Agios Nikolaos and Heraklion. For containers and larger volumes, forwarders use Heraklion, Greece's third-largest port.
