Around 6.7 million tonnes of liquid cargo passed through Siracusa in the first half of 2025 alone — almost entirely crude oil and refined products for the nearby Priolo refinery, handled at the Santa Panagia roadstead. The port forms part of eastern Sicily's petrochemical cluster spanning Augusta, Priolo Gargallo and Melilli, and moves virtually no containers or conventional breakbulk; it is a pure liquid-bulk port. Governance falls to the Eastern Sicily Port System Authority, which also oversees Catania, Augusta and Pozzallo and whose ports together recorded roughly 50 percent more cargo in the first half of 2025. A shore-power (cold-ironing) installation worth about 18 million euros and a new maritime station are currently under construction. Road and rail along the Sicilian coast provide hinterland access. Shippers needing container or ferry services should look to Catania, while large petrochemical bulk parcels are better suited to neighbouring Augusta, Italy's largest oil port.
