PSA Sines has run Terminal XXI since 2004, turning Sines into the largest container port in Portugal and a leading Atlantic transhipment point. Natural depths of about 17 metres behind a long breakwater let the port take the biggest container ships fully laden — a rarity in Europe. Capacity rose to about 2.7 million TEU in early 2024 and is set to climb toward 4.1 million as the quay grows from 1,040 metres to almost 2,000, though box volume fell roughly 13 percent in 2024. Most container traffic is transhipment linking Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Suez corridor. Energy is the second pillar: crude oil for the Galp refinery, an LNG terminal operated by REN Atlântico that covers more than 60 percent of Portugal's gas demand, plus liquid and dry bulk flows. Full customs clearance, reefer plugs and dangerous-goods capacity are available, with a motorway and a rail axis reaching Madrid and the Spanish meseta opening the hinterland. A planned new Vasco da Gama terminal, adding around 3 million TEU, would lift total capacity beyond 7 million TEU in the long run. For urgent Portuguese imports shippers may prefer Lisbon or Leixões, while Algeciras offers an alternative for Iberian transhipment.
