Born as a small Dutch East India Company dockyard in 1743 and later expanded by the Royal Navy, Simon's Town today is the South African Navy's principal base rather than a trading port. Its sheltered harbour on False Bay is protected by a 914 m breakwater and centres on the Selborne Graving Dock, a 240 m dry dock that supports naval refit and ship repair. Scheduled container, breakbulk and bulk services do not call here, and commercial cargo handling is exceptional rather than routine. Road and rail along the Cape Peninsula provide inland access. Forwarders with boxed, reefer or project cargo should use nearby Cape Town, the region's main commercial port.
