When the Trans-Arabian Pipeline was rerouted after 1948, its oil reached the Mediterranean at Zahrani, about 8 km south of Sidon — and that liquid-bulk vocation still defines the terminal today. Zahrani is an oil and fuel installation, not a multipurpose cargo port: it imports crude and refined petroleum products and feeds an adjacent power plant through a single buoy mooring. Its CBM and SBM berths handle tankers in the 80,000–100,000 DWT range at drafts close to 13 m, while the original refinery operated from 1950 until 1989 and now sits idle. There are no container cranes, breakbulk sheds or reefer plugs, and inland distribution runs by road tanker rather than rail or barge. Forwarders moving boxed or project cargo for the Sidon area should route via Beirut, with Tripoli serving dry-bulk needs further north.
