Crude oil, and crude oil only, moves across the berths at Sidi Kerir, the Mediterranean terminus of Egypt's SUMED pipeline some 30 kilometres west of Alexandria. Operated by the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Company, the facility can load up to five tankers of as much as 400,000 dwt simultaneously, backed by 28 floating-roof tanks holding around 3.1 million m³ of storage. For freight forwarders the implication is clear: there are no container, breakbulk or RoRo operations here, and no commercial customs clearance for trade goods. The terminal exists to bypass the Suez Canal, receiving crude pumped from Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea for onward shipment to Mediterranean and European refineries. Shippers needing boxes, project cargo or conventional freight should route via Alexandria or the adjacent El Dekheila container terminal instead. SUMED throughput rose sharply when Red Sea disruptions pushed tanker traffic onto the overland route.
