Where Sumatra's east coast relies on rail and toll roads to Belawan, Sibolga depends almost entirely on road haulage across the mountains, which shapes its role as the principal sea access for the west coast of North Sumatra. The Pelindo-operated multipurpose terminal handles general cargo, containers and passengers; following its expansion it offers a 153-metre multipurpose wharf, a fixed crane and a container yard rated at around 20,000 TEU per year. Up to four vessels of as much as 6,000 GT can be worked alongside. Regular ferries to Gunung Sitoli make Sibolga the gateway to Nias Island, carrying consumer and construction goods to the offshore community. With no rail link, hinterland traffic moves by road to Tarutung and the Batak highlands. For larger container volumes shippers still favour Belawan near Medan, while Teluk Bayur (Padang) serves the southern west coast.
