Big on oil but modest on boxes, Shui Dong (CN SDG) is the operational core of Maoming Port on China's southern coast, roughly 90 nautical miles west-south-west of Hong Kong. Its principal trades are crude oil, petroleum products, vegetable oil and LPG alongside dry bulk and general cargo, ranking the site among China's major crude-import gateways. Facilities include several 10,000-tonne-class liquid-chemical and oil/gas berths plus nine bulk and multipurpose wharves below the 20,000-tonne class. Annual throughput is about 17 million tonnes, while container volume sits at only some 29,000 TEU, so it is not a primary choice for containerised freight. The western Guangdong hinterland is served by road and rail. For larger box volumes, Zhanjiang, Nansha (Guangzhou) and the Shenzhen/Hong Kong hubs are the practical alternatives.
