Vessels up to 210 metres and around 64,000 tonnes deadweight, drawing as much as 13.5 metres, have called at Shingu in south-eastern Wakayama Prefecture. General cargo dominates the traffic at roughly 72 percent of calls, followed by tankers near 15 percent and passenger ships; timber import, for which the port was rebuilt in the late 1960s and 1970s, remains its signature trade. Facing the Kumano-nada Sea on the Mie border, Shingu serves a hinterland spanning Wakayama, Mie and Nara prefectures and underpins the regional lumber and sawmill industry. Container and liner services are limited, so forwarders route boxed cargo through Wakayama, Nagoya or Osaka. Road links and the Kisei Main Line carry goods inland from the port.
