Guarding the Kanmon Strait at the western tip of Honshu, Shimonoseki has long served as Japan's stepping stone toward the Korean peninsula. International ferry and RoRo lines connect the port with South Korea (Busan) and China, carrying passengers alongside accompanied and unaccompanied trailers. The port also handles containers, breakbulk and dry bulk, and is famous as Japan's leading fishing port for fugu (pufferfish). Road and rail open up western Honshu, while the Kanmon tunnels and bridge place Kyushu directly within reach. For pure container volumes, Kitakyushu/Moji across the strait and Hakata offer greater capacity. Shimonoseki's real strength lies in its international ferry and RoRo traffic toward Korea.
