Sharm El Sheikh is a passenger and cruise gateway rather than a freight port, sitting at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula where the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba meet the Red Sea. Developed as a civilian harbour from the mid-1980s around its yacht marina, it now runs a cruise terminal and scheduled ferry links to Hurghada and to Aqaba in Jordan. Freight shippers should route containers through Alexandria or Damietta, or use Adabiya and Ain Sokhna on the Gulf of Suez, while Nuweiba carries RoRo ferry cargo to Aqaba.
