Owned by the East Mining Company, Shakhtersk (RUSHA) on Sakhalin's west coast is one of the busiest coal-export points on Russia's Pacific seaboard, handling a record 13.1 million tonnes in 2023. The terminal, on the Tatar Strait, ships steam coal from the Solntsevsky open-pit mine about 28 kilometres inland, linked by a roughly 23-kilometre conveyor belt. Loading capacity exceeds 4,400 tonnes per hour, and bulk carriers are loaded at anchorage rather than at a deep-water quay. Most cargo goes to Asia-Pacific buyers such as China, South Korea, India and Japan. No containers, breakbulk or dangerous goods are handled here, since Shakhtersk is purely a coal terminal. Forwarders with other cargo for Sakhalin use Korsakov or Kholmsk, while Vanino on the mainland serves additional coal exports.
