Tied closely to Portugal's automotive industry, Setúbal on the Sado estuary south of Lisbon is the country's leading roll-on/roll-off port, exporting cars such as the VW T-Roc built at the nearby Autoeuropa plant in Palmela. Across roughly five terminals it handles about 6.1 million tonnes a year, spanning RoRo, breakbulk, dry and liquid bulk and a smaller container volume of around 20,000 TEU. The TERSADO multipurpose terminal, operated by YILPORT, covers containers, RoRo, bulk and breakbulk. A channel depth of about 11 m and quay depths up to 14 m suit mid-sized vehicle carriers and general-cargo ships. Road and rail link the port to the Palmela–Setúbal industrial cluster and Greater Lisbon. Large container shipments are usually better routed via Lisbon or Sines, but for vehicles, project and bulk cargo Setúbal (PT SET) is a first-choice gateway.
