Around 38.5 million tonnes handled in 2024 — an all-time record, with more than 40 million expected in 2025 — make Sept-Îles the premier mineral port of North America, set where the Sainte-Marguerite meets the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Iron ore from the Labrador Trough dominates traffic, loaded by IOC and ArcelorMittal at the Pointe-Noire and Relance terminals and at the multi-user dock opened in 2015, whose 16- and 20-metre berths handle bentonite, aluminium and petroleum products alongside ore. Shiploaders rated at 8,000 tonnes per hour fill Capesize bulkers that sail fully laden for Europe and Asia. Inland reach comes through the QNS&L railway, linked to the wider North American network by a 34-kilometre rail-ferry service to the mines of the Côte-Nord. The port runs no container lines and no routine box-import customs operation; shippers moving containers route through Montréal instead. For mining-related heavy-lift and project cargo, however, Sept-Îles is a long-established gateway.
