Once rivals on Puget Sound, Seattle and neighbouring Tacoma now pool their container business in the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA), which together moved about 3.34 million TEU in 2024 — up some 12% on the year. As a North American gateway for Asian trade, the port offers competitive transit times and strong rail links via BNSF and Union Pacific into the Midwest and Chicago. Customs clearance runs through U.S. Customs and Border Protection, with many importers using distribution centres in the nearby Kent Valley. For added capacity or alternative calls, forwarders turn to alliance partner Tacoma and, further south, to Oakland and Los Angeles/Long Beach. Breakbulk, project cargo and a modest bulk trade round out the port's mixed cargo base.
