Last year roughly 3.3 million barrels of petroleum and 1.7 million barrels of liquid bulk, including caustic soda, crossed Searsport's Mack Point on Penobscot Bay. As Maine's second-largest seaport, it leans heavily on energy cargo, with oil and gasoline typically 70 to 80 percent of total tonnage. The dry-bulk pier adds coke, coal, salt, iron oxide, gypsum, cement clinker and silica sand, alongside logs and project shipments.
