Around 170,000 barrels of crude a day, storage for some 1.4 million barrels and a five-kilometre safety exclusion zone describe the Sea Eagle Terminal far better than any quay would: it is a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO), not a land port. The unit is moored in the EA field offshore Nigeria, roughly 8 nautical miles southwest of the Dodo River in about 26.5 metres of water, and has been producing since December 2002. Crude is transferred by floating hose to export tankers moored in tandem alongside. Operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, the facility handles no containers, breakbulk or hinterland cargo whatsoever. Forwarders with boxed, general or project cargo should use Onne, Port Harcourt or the Lagos terminals at Apapa and Tin Can. For crude-oil export chartering in the Gulf of Guinea, however, Sea Eagle is a fixed reference point.
