Six berths totalling 730 m of quay and around 17 whitefish trawlers landing each week define Scalloway (GB SWY), the largest of the harbours run by Shetland Islands Council on the west Mainland coast. Fishing leads, supported by a refrigerated fish market built to the highest standards. Genuine cargo also moves through the port: frozen fish in reefer, bulk fertiliser, building materials, road tar and aggregates, with freight vessels calling regularly from the UK and Scandinavia. Quays accept ships up to 90 m LOA and 7.0 m draft, and a 500 m³ bunker facility is available around the clock by arrangement. For containerised liner traffic and larger general-cargo volumes, however, Lerwick is the principal commercial port of Shetland. Scalloway therefore suits fish logistics, reefer flows and regional bulk and construction-material shipments.
