General cargo, bulk, livestock and the occasional container – that is the modest freight menu of Sayda (LB SAY), the port of Sidon south of Beirut. Behind an outer breakwater, two piers handle this traffic, but vessel size is capped at roughly 5.5 m draft and about 10,000 DWT, with only some 60 freighters calling each year. For more than four millennia the site has been a Phoenician fishing harbour, and fishing plus tourism still outweigh commercial shipping. Forwarders moving containers or customs-cleared import-export volumes should plan on Beirut as the Lebanese gateway, treating Sayda as a local supplement for southern Lebanon.
