A fully automated gate, an automated stacking yard and roughly 900,000 TEU of capacity make Vado Gateway the centrepiece of the Savona-Vado port system in Liguria. Operated by APM Terminals, it ranks as Italy's first semi-automated deep-sea container terminal and among the most advanced in the Mediterranean. The adjoining Reefer Terminal adds about 250,000 TEU of capacity, 500 reefer plugs and 310 IMO slots for temperature-controlled and dangerous goods. Beyond boxes, the port handles general cargo, RoRo, dry and liquid bulk, steel products and project cargo, while Savona itself serves as a cruise port for Costa. Around 30% of container volume leaves by rail, supported by roughly ten weekly train services into northern Italy. The complex falls under the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority (Ports of Genoa), with customs handled by Italy's Agenzia delle Dogane. For wider liner coverage, nearby Genoa and La Spezia are the main alternatives.
