Sapangar Bay Container Port handled 443,884 TEU in the first ten months of 2025, up 6.8% year on year, after just over 500,000 TEU in 2024, making it the principal container gateway for the Malaysian state of Sabah, some 15 km north of Kota Kinabalu. Four container berths along roughly 500 metres of quay form the core of the terminal, which took over container handling from the older Kota Kinabalu port. DP World Sabah has run operations since September 2023 with a 51% stake, while state-linked Suria Capital holds the remaining 49% and also owns Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Kudat. The expansion meant to lift annual capacity from around 500,000 to roughly 1.25 million TEU has slipped badly: as of July 2026 construction stood at about 18% complete, with delivery still targeted for 2026. Traffic is overwhelmingly containerised, complemented by the separate Sapangar Bay Oil Terminal for petroleum products, and the port is positioned as a transshipment point for the BIMP-EAGA growth area covering Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Hinterland links to Kota Kinabalu and Sabah's west coast run by road, with no rail connection to the deep-sea berths, and customs clears through Malaysia's JKDM authority. For larger volumes or mainline coverage, Bintulu, Kuching or Peninsular Malaysia's Port Klang remain the practical alternatives.
