Around 50% of all petroleum refined in Brazil passes through São Sebastião, where the Almirante Barroso Terminal (TEBAR) ranks as Latin America's largest oil terminal. Operated by Petrobras subsidiary Transpetro, TEBAR offers four berths, 40 tanks and roughly 1.8 million cubic metres of storage, feeding four São Paulo refineries — Replan, Revap, Recap and RPBC — by pipeline. The public commercial port, run by Companhia Docas de São Sebastião, additionally handles general cargo, project loads and bulk such as barite, though at far smaller volumes. Sheltered in the São Sebastião channel between the mainland and Ilhabela island, the port offers calm water but, as an open roadstead, only limited suitability for container lines. Containerised and customs-cleared general cargo therefore concentrates on nearby Santos. For crude and product tankers, however, São Sebastião is a pillar of Brazil's petroleum supply chain.
