Roughly 220,000 tonnes of general cargo, 150,000 tonnes of containerised goods and 195,000 tonnes of bulk pass through Santiago de Cuba each year, making it Cuba's second port without being a deepwater container hub. The quays handle fuel, cement, cereals, construction materials, reefer and bagged cargo, with multipurpose cranes lifting containers and bulk up to about 50 tonnes. A modernisation completed in 2019, backed by roughly US$120 million in Chinese financing and built by CCCC, renewed handling equipment and storage and now allows ships of up to about 40,000 tonnes. A channel depth of around 7.9 metres still caps the size of vessels the port can take. Road links connect the berths to Santiago and the wider Oriente region, though there is no significant rail freight role. Shippers needing deep draught or large container volumes turn to Mariel, Cuba's modern deepwater port, or to Havana.
