Soybeans and corn dominate the cargo at Santarém, a grain-export port at the meeting point of the Tapajós and Amazon rivers in Pará, northern Brazil. Cargill operates the principal terminal, with shipping capacity of around 5 million tonnes a year and storage near 114,000 tonnes; over 5.5 million tonnes of soy and corn have moved through in a single year. The grain originates mainly in Brazil's Centre-West, especially Mato Grosso, reaching Santarém by truck via the BR-163 and by barge convoy transhipped at Miritituba and Porto Velho. The port loads dry bulk for export and handles little containerised or conventional breakbulk traffic. Customs and documentation are geared to agricultural commodity exports. For containers and project cargo, forwarders turn to Vila do Conde (Barcarena) and Itacoatiara, while Miritituba serves as the upriver grain transhipment point.
