Four berths line Santa Cruz de Barahona on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, but only the sugar and gypsum facilities see regular cargo; the others serve as lay-by berths or for fishing vessels. This natural coastal harbour is essentially a bulk export port. Sugar is loaded in bags that the crew bleeds into the holds at about 1,500 tonnes per 24 hours, while gypsum runs aboard mechanically on a conveyor belt. The cargo pier carries depths of around 9.4 m. There are no container lines or international breakbulk customs services here — for those, shippers use Caucedo near Santo Domingo for boxes or Río Haina. A partial upgrade of Barahona for cruise tourism is also planned.
