No Russian port on the Baltic handles more containers than St Petersburg — but its trade map has been redrawn since 2022. Set on the inner Gulf of Finland, the Big Port links the city and the Russian hinterland to the Baltic and the North Atlantic by rail and road. After Western lines such as Maersk, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd withdrew under the sanctions imposed from 2022, container services are now run largely by Russian and Asian operators on feeder and direct routes from China and Türkiye; in 2024 combined container volumes at St Petersburg and Ust-Luga rose by roughly a third. The Bronka terminal, the complex's only deep-water facility, offers about 500,000 TEU and some 130,000 RoRo units a year and takes ships up to 347 metres. Beyond boxes, the port handles mineral fertiliser, breakbulk, project cargo and vehicles. Customs and trade clearance follow Russian rules and, for EU, UK and US cargo, extensive sanctions that demand careful screening of every shipment. For sanctions-compliant EU flows, Hamburg, Gdańsk or Klaipėda are the practical alternatives, while Ust-Luga is gaining weight as a domestic fallback.
