Around 7 million tons of coal a year can move across the docks at Sandusky, a bulk-only transhipment point on the Ohio shore of Lake Erie. Appalachian metallurgical and steam coal arrives by rail from southern Ohio and West Virginia and is dumped into Great Lakes self-unloaders by a Heyl & Patterson high-lift dumper that averages about 2,625 tons per hour and serves vessels up to 1,000 feet (305 m) long. The terminal is run by the Sandusky Dock Corporation on a Norfolk Southern rail property, with a shipping season from mid-March through December and round-the-clock loading. Cargoes go to steel mills and power stations across the Great Lakes basin. Sandusky handles no containers, breakbulk or international customs traffic — for those services shippers turn to nearby Toledo or Cleveland. A channel depth of roughly 6.4 m caps the loaded draught of departing lakers, and hinterland access is essentially all-rail.
